Personal note from Conni Johnson Evans:
I'm assuming that Harold remembers visiting him at his home in Madisonville or Athens, TN, which would have been a very long drive over the mountains at that time. | John JOHNSON

From Gurtrude Rogers Pace or Estelle Pace Johnson to Rabon Johnson:
-Susan came to TN from Kentucky or Texas?
-Some of her relatives were from Copper Hill, TN They came (from Louisville, Ky. ?) to check if they had some inheritance due them. They made several trips to check.
Personal note from Conni Johnson Evans (1988):
On her son Lester's death certificate, Susan's place of birth was Cherokee County, NC It could be that her parents, Ben & Matilda Saunders Johnson came to Tennessee and then on to NC from Kentucky or Texas. It could also be that the informant on Lester's death certificate was mistaken as to Susan's birthplace.
I'm assuming that Susan's relatives inquired into inheritance from her and her husband, Alex's farm. That is assuming that they still owned the farm at the time of their deaths.
Alex and Susan died only 8 days apart, which is a mystery to me. Alex's death certificate indicates the cause of death was Pellagra, which is a disease resulting from a severe lack of niacin, one of the B Vitamins. Why did Susan die only 8 days later. Surely, Pellagra is not contagious, yet we must assume they did eat the same things and that it's possible for her to have the same deficiency.
(updated notes, 1994): According to the Cherokee County Heritage Vol. II, page 220/221, Benjamin and Matilda Saunders Johnson came to Cherokee Co., from Surry County, NC It doesn't say if that's where they were originally from. Further research is required to prove or quell a Texas/Kentucky connection. Relatives could however have come to inquire about property owned by Ben & Matilda (probably not Alex & Susan), however, both couples had many children in the area to whom the inheritance would go. The Cherokee County Heritage book doesn't say where all of Susan's brothers & sisters lived (although I've found references to many of them still in Cherokee County). It's possible that one of her brothers or sisters moved to Kentucky and then came back when Ben & Matilda died to sort out inheritance. | Susan Ann JOHNSON

Personal note from Conni Johnson Evans:
One of the few recollections I have of "Granddaddy" is of him sitting on a dining room chair in their trailer (this trailer seemed small to me even when I was a child, and always crowded with people). He was wearing dirty work clothes and his hair was messed up from wearing a hat. I can remember sitting on his lap and him calling me "Sweet Potato Pie". Sometimes when my father (Harold) would come home from work and sit on the dining room chair with his hair all messed up from his hat, the image of my grandfather would creep back into my mind. As I look at my father now, I can see many things that remind me of Granddaddy, or I should say that he reminds me of the way I "think" Granddaddy was, (or would have been) since I cannot remember much about him.
Memory from Kathy Yvonne Stevens (daughter of Kathryn Johnson Stevens):
We were living in Wheeling, West VA, my daddy got off work and we left to visit Grandmother and Granddaddy in Niagra Falls. This was within the last year of Granddaddy's life. It was after midnight when we got there. George (Kathy's brother) and I ran to knock on the door first. Granddaddy answered in his undershorts without turning on the lights. He said, "OH! Wait till I get my pants on! I thought ya'll were a bunch of buzzards!" | William Walter JOHNSON

From Lori Mae Pace Johnson to Rabon Johnson (in just the way she stated):
-her name was Dovey Wright Pace
-Zeke Greybeard was taken to Murphy to the courthouse to prove Indian blood. Zeke froze up. Uncle Jim Pace and Uncle Tom Wilson said they'd drown him when they were going home across the river. Zeke dug his own grave in back of his house so he could be with Suzie (big, tall, slim girl), was Cherokee Indian. Used to dig his own grave. "Stubbed up" and wouldn't say a thing. When they first come in the village, they would first go down and eat breakfast there. Greybeard and Susie went to the store and said if they wouldn't give her snuff she said, "You got it here and if you don't, I'll butn down your store."
From Gurtrude Rogers Pace or Estelle Pace Johnson to Rabon Johnson:
-Indian blood is in this line or her husband's.
Personal note from Conni Johnson Evans (1988):
I'm not sure where Aunt Lori came up with "Dovey Wright Pace". I have found in two locations (Alex Pace's death certificate and Stephen Pace's military record) that Dovey's maiden name was Martin. If Dovey was married previously to a Wright, this would account for it, but there is nothing yet which suggest that fact.
I'm confused about this story of Zeke Greybeard and Suzie. Could Suzie have been Dovey's sister and Zeke her husband? Or could Suzie have been Stephen's sister? She was probably not a daughter of Stephen and Dovey since their children were listed on Stephen's military record, unless "Suzie" was a nickname for Elizabeth D. Pace who died at age 17, but this is doubtful, even more so when it was obvious that Uncle Jim & Uncle Tom were upset with Zeke for "stubbing up". If Zeke were Jim & Tom's brother-in-law, he probably would not have much say in proving Indian blood in the Pace family. For this reason, I think that Suzie must have been Dovey's sister and that Zeke was taken to prove Indian blood of his wife and therefore proving Indian blood in her sister, Dovey.
Uncle Jim Pace refers to James P.L. Pace, son of Stephen and Dovey, and Uncle Tom Wilson is husband of Josephine Pace, daughter of Stephen and Dovey.
(update 1994): Zeke Greybeard and Suzy were probably not married. See the wonderful story in Vol. I, page 210/211 of the Cherokee County Heritage. It's still unclear if Suzy and Dovey were sisters, however it's probable that Zeke was taken to the courthouse because he was an Indian and knew all of the Indians in the area at the time and could testify if Dovey came from Indian blood. | Dovey S. MARTIN
