Merritt was a hunter, drinker, and possibly a womanizer. He killed a man in a hit and run accident with his car. See newspaper article in files.
It was a Thanksgiving night, and it happened on the Jobs Corner - Millerton Highway. He confessed the next day to the brother of the man he killed. According to Nelda, he got a good lawyer from Athens, PA and got off with no punishment.
There is a picture of Merritt taken with 2 friends when hunting, and shows them with a flask in their hands also.

The legend according to Valerie and Claudia -
Alfred was separated from his wife Maureen and came back to the US. Her father beat him. He saved money in the states and then they got back together and he died shortly afterwards under mysterious circumstances.
Maureen had him cremated quickly so no autopsy was done. Claudia thinks he was murdered for his money.
He met Maureen in Clearwater Beach when she was on vacation with her family from Canada. He was in the Navy. They lived in VA Beach some - Peter was born there. He retired from the Navy and worked for Mobil Oil in Libya and Saudi Arabia. She didn't like his job. When they lived in VA, they had the perfect house. She was Scottish, living in Canada. Wanted to have the baby in a non-military hospital because she wanted a C-section and Uncle Lewis wouldn't give them the money for it. Peter was born with a defective heart and she resented Alfred. Her parents moved in with them and never left. They accused him of fooling around with Arab women while he was in Libya to computerize the oil industry. He bought house in Scotland for Maureen, baby, and her parents and they wouldn't let him back in until just before he died. | Alfred Merritt COOKE

John Feller's father came over from Switzerland on a sailboat. He left his wife Bertha, and took off and was lost on the western frontier. His wife must have been from Switzerland also. His son John was about 13 years old when he came across from Switzerland with his parents in 1848/
John took up the trade of a blacksmith. His first shop was in Maximo, OH.
His wife, Mary Julia Schilling, came from Norway, but lived in Manhattan. Her brother was a plumber in Mt. Vernon, NY.
